In the creation of a web site, there are several groups of people who participate: product managers or marketing representatives who are responsible for defining functionality and design, user interface designers who create the actual visuals, and the developers who are responsible for implementing the final product. Of these groups, developers tend to get a reputation for being a bit touchy and grumpy for coming up with reasons why things can’t or shouldn’t be done. The reason why this happens is because the developer is, consciously or subconsciously, trying to manage the project’s technical debt.

Packt Publishing has released the most recent installment in their popular Drupal Themes series of titles: Drupal 7 Themes. The new book, from author Ric Shreves, updates and expands up on the Drupal 6 edition.
The new edition differs from previous efforts in several regards. In addition to updating the content to reflect the changes in the theming layer in Drupal 7, the author has shifted focus to emphasize the use of sub-themes in theme customization and in the creation of new themes. “Sub-theming is one of the most powerful tools themers possess and proficiency with this tool unlocks the presentation layer in Drupal,” states the author. “When you combine sub-theming with the ability to intercept and override templates, styles and themable functions, there’s literally nothing you can’t do.” The book has also been re-organized with new chapters focused on solutions to common issues faced in theming and another dedicated to useful tools and modules that can assist with theming. “We also stepped away from lengthy code excerpts in favor of more narrow snippets focused on demonstrating specific techniques,” added Shreves.

Finding Drupal Rockstars
If you think a good man is hard to find, you should try looking for a good Drupal developer! The competition is fierce for experienced Drupal developers, and as Lullabot's development manager, the task of tracking them down usually falls on my plate. Athough Lullabot's status in the community helps us to attract talented individuals, it's still a challenging process.
Here are a few things that I look for in Drupal developers, and the resources that I recommend to our clients when they're looking to add some Drupal muscle. Hopefully, this advice will also be helpful to individuals who are looking for a job and want to stand out from the crowd.

This morning is an exciting moment: Drupal Commons version 1.6 is released! This release brings some really exciting new advancements:
- Two new themes. (Yay!)
- Usability improvements
- A collection of smaller, yet important feature advances
Let me start off talking about the two new themes. Having these two themes, and bundling them into the default distribution, is HUGE. A key advantage of Drupal Commons is that it is built on Drupal - a platform that enables organizations to fully reflect their brand on their community site. But this was an abstract idea to most people who were kicking the Drupal Commons tires. All they saw was how Commons looked OOTB, and it was hard to imagine a different look & feel.
